With almost guaranteed sunshine throughout the summer months (and even when there's a bit of rain it usually clears up within hours), it's no surprise that the city's outdoor pools are popular places.

Parading around in the latest styles from Aussiebum and ES is a crowd of pumped-up gay men who need to be seen to be believed... but that doesn't mean that you can't enjoy the view whatever shape or size you are! A great place to hang out between parties or to recover at the end of the weekend.

The pools at Lagos are easily accessible by Metro and bus - or a 40 minute walk around the palace and over the canal if you've got any energy for some sightseeing.

A few tips:

Getting the beers in is a bit of a trial - with a coupon machine that dispenses tickets for your drinks - and then a bar that sometimes doesn't have what you've just paid for, making the whole thing pretty tricky! There is a second cash bar down by the middle pool which simplifies the whole process...

The municipal pools at Lagos get absolutely rammed over Pride weekend, but you can beat the queues with a bit of planning: The queue is to buy tickets rather than to get through the gates, so if you get there at the start of the weekend buy yourself a discount '10 pass' ticket you won't have to queue again during your stay. Even if you don't use all 10 trips you'll probably save money, and you can always flog the remaining tickets to someone at the back of the queue.

Although it'll be obvious to you once you get there - it's the top pool that seems to be a magnet for gay men. Get there at lunchtime to reserve your spot on the grass, or be prepared to put a towel out on the (very hot) tiled area around the pool instead.
